NFC stands for Near Field Communication. A tiny chip sits inside a sticker or sign. When a phone is held close to it, the phone reads the chip and opens whatever link is stored on it. No app, no typing, no battery in the chip — the phone itself powers it for the split second it is read.
A QR code is a square black-and-white pattern that stores a link as an image. Point a phone camera at it, tap the little banner that appears, and the page opens. Every modern phone camera reads QR codes with nothing extra installed.
